Shelves are an essential part of Montessori. When we first started Montessori we had 1 shelf the Ikea cube shelf. We then upgraded to the Sprout LUCE triple 60. Absolutely stunning! beautiful well made and you get what you pay for when you purchase anything from Sprout.
After some time we added 2 more shelfs (2) 2 tier shelfs and that was enough for the time. When she turned 3 we needed more because we began homeschooling. We soon changed our entire room to Ikea BillyBookcases because they are adjustable and customizable.
Pro: adjustable and customizable
Con: quality
Ikea quality can not be compared to Sprout but I needed shelfs that I could adjust to our materials
Shelfs store all your materials, everything is visible and accessible to the child(ren). They are low enough for the materials to be in reach and are typically of natural material. When you use a shelf instead of a toy box the child is able to return everything back because everything has a spot. Everything available on the shelf is also complete vs in a toy box the child must dig to find the items they need.
